Do you need to get your HVAC air ducts cleaned? Maybe. Maybe not.
Dirty air ducts can have a negative effect on your indoor air quality … and your health and that of your family. Yet the United States Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have guidelines for how often you should get your ducts cleaned.
The EPA simply says to get your ducts cleaned “as needed.”
They can’t give an overall recommendation because there are a wide variety of factors that go into the determination. Things like type of ductwork, condition, location, age, local environment, etc.
So how do you know?
While some signs of dirty ducts are obvious, others aren’t unless you know what to look for. For example…
What To Look For
If you can see a visible build-up of dust and grime on the registers, that’s a good indication that your ducts behind those registers also are dirty and need to be cleaned.
If you remove the registers and look inside, you’ll be able to see if there’s a buildup of dust and debris that needs to be cleaned. Of course, you’ll only be able to see a very small portion of the total duct system, but it’s a good indication that there’s a problem.
If dust or other particles blow out of your registers when your system is on, you definitely should get your air ducts cleaned.
While these are obvious signs that you should get your air ducts cleaned … or at least inspected … there also are less obvious indicators that you shouldn’t ignore.
If you and your family are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you should get your air ducts inspected:
- Increased Nasal/Sinus Allergies
- Poor Sleep
- Skin Allergies
The dust and dirt that accumulates in your HVAC air ducts (and that can become airborne for you and your family to breathe) can include particulates containing any or all of the following:
- Dead Skin
- Animal Dander
- Insect Waste
- Dust Mites
- Other Toxins
These indoor air pollutants are introduced to your home by a variety of sources — cooking, cleaning, smoking, pets, and/or just living and moving around — and they don’t all get trapped in your ducts
So while getting your air ducts cleaned isn’t removing the source of the problem — it’s not going to keep new pollutants out of your air — it can help minimize the cumulative effect.
Keep It Cool, Keep It Clean
Our motto for indoor air quality is “Keep it Cool, Keep it Clean.” Since the cool air generated by your air conditioner travels through the air ducts into your home, keeping your HVAC air ducts clean will help improve the air you breathe
